The college is bringing out this Library Hand book for the year 2017-2018. I am happy to observe that this book is comprehensive and clear with regard to the structure, governance of our College Library. The integral part of any academic institution is its library. It is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life that has liberated more people than all the wars in history. The size and quality of its collection is indicative of the institution’s academic excellence. Islamiah Women’s College’s library has for the past 21 years been the source of wisdom for women in and around the region. It has shaped build careers and personalities of many a brilliant woman. We have a collection of 13,000 books and 34 journals in the college Central library. The library is fully-automated and equipped with UGC approved SOUL software. INFLIBNET, NDL and NPTEL resources form the core of our unique Virtual Library.

The Handbook on Library is a guide to library users who wish to utilize its resources effectively and easily. Information are aplenty. And there is no dearth of resources. But accessing them without any waste of time or effort requires specific knowledge of its mechanism. This book is presented in the form of Photo shots of WebPages with lucid and detailed explanations that would in a simple and efficient way ease one through the process of accessing relevant materials without any hassle.

In this Foreword, I appeal to all the students to first read this Handbook before looking for your subject matter and take the help of Library professionals where necessary, as this is a rare and special opportunity not to be missed. I thank our Librarian Dr. Aariefa Basheer for her keen interest in bringing out this book at this crucial moment. The Handbook of Islamiah Women’s College Central Library has been framed to make the library more user-friendly for the users. The book intends to guide the Readers/ Users to navigate through the facilities available to the best advantage. There are three divisions in the library and each division services are clearly and explicitly explained in this Handbook. Our Library is a member of INFILIBNET, NDL &NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning). Screenshots of Webpages are added for easy understanding of the facilities. Virtual Library service functions in separate section specifically allotted to it. Facilities such as e-books, e-journals, e-thesis, etc. are made available for easy access. The e-resources can be downloaded into external devices where necessary. The Users are expected to read this Handbook for a comprehensive and complete understanding of the features and facilities for best effective use.

I extend my sincere gratitude and thanks to our Secretary & Correspondent Janab H. Abdul Haleem Sahib, for his support and cooperation in the publication of this book. A library is the beacon and store house of knowledge and information that forms the foundation of every institution. The function of the Library is to collect, store, process and disseminate pertinent information to the seeking researcher at appropriate juncture. This temple of learning had its inception at the very outset and has been constantly growing ever since. A Library requires huge funds to constantly acquire process and disseminate resources. It constantly needs to upgrade its resources to suit modern trends and fulfill the ever increasing and ever changing demands of the modern readers and researchers. Our Library has a collection of nearly 14,300 books relating not only to the academic requirements, but also collections on philosophy, logic, politics and religion. The fully automated library functions on the basis of Open Access System in which the students and staff have unlimited usage of the treasures within.

The college subscribes 29 National Research Journals, 34 Magazines and dailies. Almost all back volumes of the Journals are bounded and preserved. The college is subscribing nearly 1,25,000 e-books and more than 6000 e-Journals through INFLIBNET and NPTEL. The reference section of the library caters to the needs of the students and research scholars of our college. Our library extended its services to the readers in the VIRTUAL LIBRARY in a separate building.

The college has included one library hour, in the regular time table of Undergraduate and Postgraduate students to inculcate reading habit in students. Separate Reading room is available in the first floor of the library for the same.



A Barcode Multiline Scanner is installed in the Reception Counter for Library online attendance system. Every students/faculty should show their ID Card at the time of entering into the library and their attendance is recorded in the library user database. This section deals with lending of books, Issue of Galaxy, News letter, Calendar and No due certificate to the students.

Soul Software (Version 2.0)

This software is the University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended software installed in our Library for Automation. All the Library books, Theses and Dissertations have been digitalized and preserved. The main feature of this software are lending (book issue and return) , Data entry, Subject wise searching , Generation of Report by Department wise, Barcoding of books etc.


The left side of the entrance is Reference and Books section. There are six rows of steel racks arranged department-wise along with General books. Each book is pasted with barcoded labels at the lower left side corner. The barcode label indicates the original position of book.

(Row means 5th Row among the 6 rows, S-means Shelf, R-means Rack)

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue)

To save the time of the Reader OPAC System has been installed. The users may search the books through the OPAC system. There is one computer allotted for this purpose in Lending Section. Users may search the book by Author (or) Title (or) subject wise. A barcoded slip pasted on the left side corner of the book. It shows the exact position of the book in the Library (Row-Shelf-Racks) . Eg. Row 5/S2/R5

Library Tokens

Our Library issues books to all our faculty members and students(UG/PG). Lending period is 15 days. Library tokens are issued on the following basis.

UG Students : 2 Tokens
PG Students: 2 Tokens
Faculty Members:5Tokens

New Arrivals Display Rack

Whenever library purchases New Books (New edition/ updated edition), they will be displayed on this rack for a month. It is essential / useful for every user to know the recent additions in the library.

Book Bank

Book bank facility is created and maintained for the underprivileged UG/PG students .Books will be issued to the economically weaker students for one full semester with recommendation of the HOD concerned.

Faculty Publications

A separate cupboard is allotted for the publications to accommodate books, journals, and individual articles published in journals and conference proceedings. Faculty paper presentations at the different conferences, Individual book publications.

Reprography Unit

Our library has one photocopy machines. This facility is for all the users of the library at the subsidized rate.

Reading Area

In this area digital library, periodical racks, back volumes, Research scholar section and question bank cupboard are available.

Question Bank

A separate cupboard is allotted for the previous for questions. These question papers are arranged subject wise. Question papers are also available in online mode.

Periodicals Rack

There are racks arranged for the current issue of journals and magazines. Our library is subscribing journals, both national and international. There is leading news papers displayed for the readers.

Digital Library

This is hybrid library merged with central library. A separate section is allotted for the digital library. In this library, internet facility is available with a speed of 100mbps.E-books are available. This Digital networked library exclusively setup for research scholars.

Virtual Library

This is a paper-less library. There are dedicated computers systems available with internet connectivity. Virtual library provides NDL e-resources and online service. NDL video lectures with head phone facilities. A-View software for webinar from NDL and more than CD/DVDs is available subject wise.

Our Library is member of the INFLIBNET. It provides online information sources for the members. Some of the main features are highlighted.

NList e-Resources

Nlist e-resources provide more than 6000 online journals in all subject discipline. It also provides 1,25,000 titles of e-books. All this resources are available in full text and it will be downloadable format.

ShodhGangotri. A Repository of synopsis submitted to Indian Universities for Registration in Ph.D Programme. This portal is different from Shodhganga, because under this portal only synopsis available. Research scholor should submit their synopsis to shodhgangotri after getting approval/authorization from the concerned university. This will avoid the duplication of theses submitting to the university.

Home Page indCat books

Online Union Catalogue of Indian Universities is unified Online Library Catalogues of books, theses and journals available in major university libraries in India. The union database contains bibliographic description, location and holdings information for books, journals and theses in all subject areas available in more than 181 university libraries across the country. A Web-based interface is designed to provide easy access to the merged catalogues. The IndCat is a major source of bibliographic information that can be used for inter-library loan, collections development as well as for copy cataloguing and retro-conversion of bibliographic records. The IndCat consists of three components available in open access to users and librarians.

e-PG pathshala

Under e-PG pathshala 71 subjects are covered as e-content. Interested Faculties may upload their content in this portal. Before that they have to create their personal profile. This portal is very much useful for the Post graduate students.

e-PG Pathshala. A Gateway to all Post Graduate Courses, e-contents are available in 77 subjects at Postgraduate level.

OJAS. Open Journal Access System-Open journal system on servers at INFLIBNET is to faciliatate hosting of electronic versions of journals into open aaccess mode with all processes of submission, peer-reviewing, editing loayout designing and publishing built into it.

A-View Software. The programmes/courses conducted by Inflibnet in several places in India will be available in both live and recorded format.

e Acharya

e–Acharya. The INFLIBNET Centre has developed a web-based interface called “e–Acharya an Integrated e-Content Portal” for all e-content projects, developed / funded under the National Mission of Education through ICT.


Vidwan. This Portal highlights the Subject Expert Database in India and faculties may upload their profile in this portal (


Vidya-mitra is an online learning portal for all the e-content projects developed under the NME-ICT (National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology), MHRD. The portal provides facility to search and browse all hosted content wherein a learner can easily access the desired material including audio/video learning material, textual material, multimedia-enriched materials etc. through a single interface.

Research Project Database

Research Project Database is details of the accomplished and ongoing funded projects, carried out by various faculty members, working at various universities in India. Currently, it contains more than 13600 research project’s information funded by various funding agencies viz. UGC, ICAR, ICMR, DST and DBT etc. The details of the project information have been collected from the project directors, and funding agencies.

Local Chapter Established for our College

NTEL has established our college as a Local Chapter for its online courses, conducted online and certified in co-ordination with IIT Madras.

SPOC Administrator Login

NPTEL has appointed a Faculty as the SPOC (Single Point of Contact) from our college. Through this we have been given administrative rights to enroll our college students for NPTEL online courses.

College Membership for National Digital Library

Our college is a member of NDL – National Digital Library. The NDL India is an all-digital library that stores information (metadata) about different types of digital contents including books, articles, videos, audios, thesis and other educational materials relevant for users from varying educational levels and capabilities. It provides a single-window search facility to access digital contents currently existing in India as well as other digital sources under a single umbrella.

Membership of American Library of U.S Consulate

Our college is a member of American Library. The American Center includes more than 15,000 books on varied subjects.

The American Library has issued cards to the college, through which the students and staff of the college can utilize the resources at the American Library.

V. Conference/Seminars/Workshops

Our College is organizing one day Seminar on “E-Resources for Academic and Pursued”. Resource person is Dr.K.Kalia Perumal, Library , University of Madras. It is very useful for staff and students. From this seminar they can get familiarized regarding the effective usage of digital library.

VI. Book Exhibition

Every Academic year Library has organizing Books Exhibition. There are three to four Book Sellers, Publishers and Distributors displaying their books. Faculty and Research scholars, students are visiting the book fair. Latest collections of books General Knowledge books, books for Competitive Exam etc., are displayed. During the books exhibition special discounts provided to students.
